On Sunday the usually tranquil River Thames was transformed into a hotbed of competition as it became the setting for Wallingford Rowing Club’s annual Winter Head race. Held over a 4200m course between Cholsey and Wallingford, the event attracted over 300 crews from across the country, its largest ever entry.

Local clubs demonstrated their prowess with a number of wins. Wallingford celebrated success for its Women’s Novice Eight, while the club’s veteran rowers also had success in the Men’s Masters F/G 8+, Men’s Masters D 8+ and Women’s Masters C 8+. At the highest level, Wallingford also won the Women’s Elite 4-.

Wallingford Rowing Club Captain Caroline Greves said: “We were delighted to draw so many entries from clubs across the country – it goes to show that Wallingford Head remains one of the most highly regarded events in the winter club rowing calendar. Many thanks to all the local volunteers who contributed their time, energy and cake making skills to make the event possible.”
